Mary Shelley and Frankenstein: The Origin of a Myth

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Author: Sherry Helms

How mutable are our feelings, and how strange is that clinging love we have of life even in the excess of misery!”, as spelled out by Mary Shelly in her wide spread classic Gothic fiction Frankenstein. Romanticized? Enlightened? Then comes more from Mary Shelley’s brain child Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus.

How much ‘myths’ do interest you? Are you familiar with the myth of Prometheus? Mary Shelley deals with historical myths in a modern style.

Victor Frankenstein, the scientist and the protagonist is presented in the form of mythic Prometheus, who rebels against the traditions, creates life and shapes his own destiny. Prometheus’ ‘fire and light’ takes the form of electricity in this modern world. Shelley does not condemn the act of Victor’s creation but his act of desertion of his own creation that actually gave birth to the ‘monster’. Frankenstein fails in his act of creation and is called “The Modern Prometheus”.

There are two other major myths in the novel. One is Adam from Bible. Victor resembles Adam as he falls from God’s grace after he eats the forbidden fruit from Tree of Knowledge. Another is Satan, from Paradise Lost. After the monster grew to adulthood, he realized he is not Adam, rather Satan, because of his feelings of hatred and despair for the human society.

Romanticism is portrayed in a completely different manner from the traditional one. The novel revolves around the moral and mental struggles of Victor Frankenstein, the protagonist. He has to sacrifice his own family and own love to fulfill his ambitions. Get along with the romantic sides of the characters.

Why are humans biased against some certain sections of society? They really need to go through the process of Enlightenment to learn how to include everyone to form an equal and healthy society. This is when Shelley thinks the idea of Enlightenment is necessary in every society, to perfect the humanity. Society and its evils are actual parents of the dangers for humanity.

Shelley’s loss of a baby also had a crucial influence on the novel. That is why she calls it a “birth myth” where she comes in term with the death of her mother and also her failure as a mother. In this context Anne K Mellor, the feminist scholar, suggests, “… [Frankenstein] is profoundly concerned with natural as opposed to unnatural modes of production and reproduction”. Victor’s act of creation is portrayed as a sin to female principles. The monster, child of male ego, becomes the destroyer of natural female principles.

Written at the beginning stage of Industrial Revolution, Shelley here points out how improper use of science and technology can cause danger for the society. The artificially created Monster is seen as a probable result of recent scientific developments like test-tube babies and robots. The Monster may also be interpreted as symbol of modern technology. This is why Frankenstein is called the pioneer of science – fiction.

Hope you did not miss the point that Frankenstein is a novel that no book lover can miss reading. If you have not been still into it, then just go for the ride. Mary Shelley has given you open permission to interpret the book in your own way.

Get Ready For An Invasion Of Angels

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Author: Mel Taylor

We all know vampires have ruled literature over the last decade, but what is the next big craze to hit bookshelves around the globe? Angels.

The idea for my debut angel novel,‘Above The Clouds’, came when I was just sixteen-years-old, but little did I know that six years down the line, this would be the very topic all teens/YA readers would be talking about. There has been a boom in angel stories over the past couple of years and there are now several incredible novels on the shelves. As a complete angel fanatic, I read most of them as soon as they were released, but it has also been said that literature is already moving on from angels and onto the ‘next big thing’.

Despite the notion that publishers are always looking ahead to future crazes, I think there is yet to be an invasion of angels on the literary scene, and my debut novel may be just the one to do so!

Every angel book I have read has it’s own spin on the ethereal beings and each one holds a totally unique concept, but… almost all of them are set on Earth, and almost all of them surround a female protagonist falling desperately in love with a male angel. This is where ‘Above The Clouds’ differs.

Firstly, the story doesn’t just revolve around one angel figure – there are hundreds! From cheeky cherubs to warrior angels, and all-powerful Dominions to a rebellious Guardian named Stacey, the story is set in the angelic and human realms, which already makes it a distinctly unique novel.

The plot swings between the two worlds, introducing Golden Gates and a Great Hall that sits high in the clouds for angels to retrieve human assignments. It is a world of innocence and purity, but Stacey hates everything about it – the music gives her a headache, she frequently resists the urge to punch an angel or two in the face and she would much rather spend all day watching humans than conversing with the angels.

When news of a terrible prophecy sends the angels into a frenzied panic, Stacey antagonizes the situation and flees to the one place she is forbidden to go – Earth. Finally feeling free amongst humankind, Stacey abandons her angelic duties and starts to enjoy the wonders of this new and exciting world.

As she forgets about the angels and the turmoil she left behind, her actions lead to a variety of disastrous and life-shattering consequences that turn her world upside down and almost destroy the human and angelic realms forever.

Readers of ‘Above The Clouds’ can escape into the magic and beauty of the heavens, whilst also relating to Stacey’s desperate fight for acceptance amongst the human race. It’s a story of love, loss, betrayal, deception and discovering where you truly belong.

‘Above The Clouds’ is currently being sent to the UK’s leading publishers and I have high hopes of becoming a number one bestselling author!

Has the angel craze died before it has already begun? Certainly not!

Is there room for one more angel story amongst the already highly competitive and lucrative teen market? Most definitely… YES!!

A Tribute to Mother Teresa: The Light of Life

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Author: Sherry Helms

Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace. Money will come if we seek first the Kingdom of God – the rest will be given ” – Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa, a spiritual and divine personality, is the bliss of Jesus amidst this mundane, money- centric world. There is no hope, no light, no love and no friendship with God in the darkness of humankind. Mother Teresa is considered to be sent by some heavenly power to preach the message of peace and harmony in this war-torn creation of God. The “poorest among the poor” community of the mankind looks upon her as “God’s messenger”, whom God has assigned the task of serving the mankind selflessly and glorify His Holiness.

Here are top five books for the interested individuals who want to be inspired by Mother Teresa’s teachings and messages. The books can surely transform the course of our lives.

Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light: We know Mother Teresa for her noble service to the poorest of the poor. But before this book was published, we have never delved deep into the loneliness of her inner soul. This book is a collection of her letters to her confidantes where she shared her interior life for the first time. If someone is really looking towards understanding her philosophy, then this chronicle of her spiritual journey is a must- read.

No Greater Love: Inspire yourself to be a greater human. This book is what we call a complete encyclopedia of Mother Teresa’ life and teachings. An up- to-date biography along with her thoughts and teachings on love, forgiveness, service, Christianity and many more. Come closer to the heart of this ideal lady with this graceful and simple testament of her life.

Mother Teresa: In My Own Words: “To me, Jesus is the Life I want to live, the Light I want to reflect, the Way to the Father, the Love I want to express, the Joy I want to share, the Peace I want to sow around me”, as the saying goes by Mother Teresa. Hundreds and thousands of similar quotes and stories of Mother Teresa are compiled in this beautiful book. Mother Teresa shares her views on love, faith, hope and Jesus in her own words with all of her followers.

Mother Teresa’s Secret Fire: What has been the source of Mother Teresa’s immense energy and perseverance throughout her life? How an encounter with Jesus transformed her flow of life? This book gives us the insight of how our love for God can quench His “thirst of love”, “thirst for souls”. Mother Teresa’s personal story of this holy encounter with God can change our understanding of God, life and humanity.

Something Beautiful for God: This is the ultimate book written on this immortal humanitarian, the light of hope, love and life. Published in 1971, this book by Malcolm Muggeridge reflected the light of her life on the Western World and Mother Teresa’s presence was introduced universally.

Let never extinguish the light of Mother Teresa’s soul. Love God and surrender your lives for others. Blessings of God will be showered on us by the law of nature.

Revival of the Forgotten: The Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Author: Sherry Helms

Explore science, society and racism with a new dimension of truth and justice, passion and compassion. This book is highly recommended for every responsible social citizen throughout the world. Let us consider every single human being, lying at the bottom of every development.

Henrietta Lacks- HeLa to scientists, was a Southern small tobacco farmer. All her dying cancerous cells were taken away from her without her knowledge. The cells or HeLa have been ‘immortal’ since then, cultured for an immortal cell line in medical research. The cells are now sold in billions and they are instrumental in developing polio vaccines, uncovering secrets of cancer and advancing studies of cloning and genetics.

Henrietta Lacks life become immortal as  it was sacrificed selflessly for the future generation. But what is the value of such immortality? Has she or her family ever been given justice for such a huge contribution? Have ever light of hope reached her family? Rebecca Skloot unfolds all the answers in her bestseller novel The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, an eye- opener for all of us.

After such a noble contribution, the most deprived and victimized ones remain Henrietta’s own family. Deborah, her daughter was shattered and shocked to learn what happened to her mother. While Henrietta is one of the central figure in the developments of medicine, then why her own daughter had to die at the age of fifteen, without any medical insurance? “If our mother cells done so much for medicine, how come her family can’t afford to see no doctors?” Deborah asked.

The name of Henrietta remains buried under some nameless remote grave.  Is this how science progresses? Exploitation of the poor and the uneducated, is this the ethics that science follows?

Rebecca Skloot is brilliant in her revelations of the dark social and economic conditions of Afro- Americans. Their bodies are merely used for experimentation illegally, without any recognition or acknowledgment. Rebecca pours down all her heart, mind and soul into the novel and became an integral part of the Lacks family for the last ten years.

George R.R. Martin: A Historical Twist in Epic Fantasy

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Author: Sherry Helms

How do you rate your power of imagination? How far your flight of fantasy can take you around? If you are a fellow of modern imagination, then just go along with George R.R. Martin and explore new possibilities in this mundane world.

The biggest creation by Martin is his epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. Primarily planned as a trilogy, the series has now successfully published five volumes under it. The sequence follows as A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons.

A Game of Thrones#1: A new classic born in the history of fantasy. An excellent combination of fantasy and modernity, adventure and conflicts, medievalism and contemporary realism. The first volume of the series mesmerizes you with its brilliant power of storytelling, plot- construction, symbolism and magic of characterization. It excels over all your expectations.

A Clash of Kings#2: A most justified sequel to such an enormous beginning to the series. This is what we call adult fantasy that enhances your imagination power and teaches you the art of characterization. This volume is the symbol of realism and fantasy, presented together in a well-knitted texture. Sounds like an exciting oxymoron? That is what A Clash of Kings is all about.

A Storm of Swords#3: Get ready to move beyond the world of your likely imagination. Get engrossed in the epic battle of darkness and light. After reading this novel of the series, you will definitely hand over the throne of epic fantasy to G.R.R. Martin. Captivate the intensity and get emotionally involved with the characters. Astonished! Absorbed! Is this your reaction? Then keep gushing because this is not the end. Stay hooked.

A Feast for Crows#4: Another twist among the twisted tales of the fantasy series. This book is what we can call ‘differently able’. After lots of tensions and realities you faced in the previous books, this is where you can breathe a little and focus on the subtlety it offers. This will only help in tightening the entire plot of the whole series. It gives new dimensions to the characters and it is terrific in its own way.

A Dance with Dragons#5: Experience a new range of surprises and revelations from this fifth volume of the series. It is completely worthy to your long wait after the fourth volume. The climax offers you with the most shocking and fast- moving actions before moving towards the interim end of the series. So the best keeps on rolling from the pen of Martin. Dance with the dragons and keep on dancing.

George R.R. Martin intrigues you to experience an extraordinary journey with him with this compelling work of art. Love some of them or hate some of them, you just cannot ignore them.

Writing Fantasy

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Author: Karen Azinger

To trope or not to trope, that is the question. What is a trope, you might ask? Tropes are the classical elements that define a story as fantasy.

Most publishers today are looking for something “different”, a new magical system or a bizarre monster-villain. You know the kind of books I’m talking about. I like those kinds of books, I do, but like many die-hard fantasy readers, what I truly love are well-written stories steeped in the classical fantasy tropes.

I yearn to dawn burnished armor, greaves and gorget and gauntlet, and to take up a sword and fight for love and justice, for kingdoms and crowns. To ride a foam-flecked mare through a moonlit forest in a desperate bid for escape. To weave sticky strands of politics with the Spider Queen in the hopes of snaring a traitor.

To discover a sanctuary of knowledge where all the hallways are jewel-bright with calligraphy, every wall echoing with prophesies. To ride through a vivid land of towering castles and mysterious mists, where all the sunsets are crimson-red, the star-strewn nights are cobalt-blue, and the summer fields are malachite-green.

And beneath it all, I want a tale well told, a tapestry brimming with complex characters, each with their own motives and aspirations. I want a story bursting with plot twists that evoke surprise and wonder. And woven beneath it all, I want themes that pluck the heartstrings and challenge the mind. This is the epic fantasy that I love to read; this is the epic fantasy that I strive to write.

The Steel Queen is the first book in The Silk & Steel Saga. In a medieval world of forgotten magic, mortals are lured to the chessboard of the gods where an epic struggle of lives, loves and crowns hang in the balance, yet few understand the rules. You’ll empathize with the good and pray they prevail but you’ll truly feast on the bad who are utterly compelling.
